The beach called La Pelosa is a short distance north of Stintino, on a peninsula in north-west Sardinia.

Italy This Way review: we don't often review individual beaches, but La Pelosa is very well known and often said to be the most beautiful beach in Sardinia...

La Pelosa beach in Sardinia

Because of its location on a long promontory, getting to La Pelosa beach will always involve quite a long detour - for example, it is about 40 kilometres north-west of Sassari.

Before you set off to visit it is very important that you make a reservation at www.spiaggialapelose.it: it is not possible to simply turn up and visit the beach without a reservation.

You should also note that there are several restrictions that apply on the beach, including:

  • you can not make holes in the sand or make sandcastles on the beach
  • you can not put a beach towel on the sand, there must be a mat between the towel and the sand to prevent the beach sand being carried away on towels (mats can be purchased near the beach)
  • if you have sand on your feet, this must be washed off using the taps provided on the beach

By now you are probably wondering if the time and effort in a visit involved make a trip to the beach of La Pelosa too difficult to bother...

La Pelosa beach

The beach at La Pelosa is of fine white sand, against a beautiful clear blue sea, and with a tower on a small rocky outcrop in the sea beyond the beach. It is very pretty, and the sand slopes extremely gently, so you can walk a long way out in the sea before it reaches your knees.

If you are wondering why this description doesn't match the photos I have included here, it is because the sea was rather busy with people standing knee deep in the water having photos taken, presumably for Instagram etc. In many countries photos posted on websites are not permitted to show people that can be recognised, and it was not possible to take a photo without people!

So yes it is very beautiful at La Pelosa. For me it was not the most beautiful beach I saw in Sardinia, but it was perhaps the most unusual, unlike any beach I recall seeing before, and I was pleased we made the long detour to visit.

And before you ask, my favourite beach that we saw in Sardinia was the beach at Li Cossi Costa Paradiso and the most beautiful were the beaches on the boat trip from Cala Gonone, but there were a lot of beaches we didn't see...!
