Visit Tiso

Tiso is a very small village in the Val di Funes region of the dolomites, and north-east of Bolzano. Tiso is also called Teis - all the places in this part of Italy have a German name as well as an Italian name.

Explore Tiso

You will discover Tiso as part of your visit to the Val di Funes: this valley is part of the dolomites region, now a protected UNESCO world heritage site, and a very beautiful region of unspoiled countryside with a backdrop of the dolomite mountains. See our Val di Funes guide for more information.

Tiso is one of three main villages in Val di Funes: the other two are Saint-Peter and Saint-Magdalena. Although it is slightly further from the best views of the mountains, we stayed in Tiso when visiting the region, and would do so again, as it is a lovely little village.

The village is centred around a church, and in the centre there is also a shop for buying basic provisions as well as some houses in the traditional architectural style of Trentino.

There is a small geology museum in the centre of Tiso that introduces the remarkable range of minerals and geological types that you can find in the region. There are also three short walks that leave from in front of the museum and introduce the nature and geology of the region, so you have somewhere to go for a stroll each morning and can enjoy beautiful scenery and learn something at the same time!

The walk from the centre Of Tiso to the Hill of the Holy Sepulchre only takes five minues and is interesting: as well as very far-reaching views in both directions you can also see a bunker that was built when this part of Italy was on the frontier during the First World War, and a tiny chapel with a small shrine.

The Hill of the Holy Sepulchre was the centre of population here in the Bronze Age and it is thought that pagan rituals were held on the hill before it became a christian area and the baroque chapel was built in the 17th century. From the 15th century to the 18th century waning fires were lit on the hill as beacons when ther were signs of trouble.

There are several small hotels and restaurants in and near Tiso: we stayed in Gasthof Stern right in the centre of the village and were pleased to discover it also had a great restaurant as well as a pizzeria so are happy to recommend it.
