Visit Villa Rufolo

The Ville Rufolo is one of the two villas to visit in Ravello, a small town on the Amalfi coast of south-west Italy.

Italy This Way review: the Villa Rufolo has one of the best views across the Mediterranean to be found in Italy, so a visit is an essential part of your trip along the Amalfi coast

You enter Villa Rufolo through an arched entrance in an ancient stone tower, on the corner of the main square in the centre of Ravello.

This imposing tower, called Torre Maggiore, is 30 metres high. You can climb up inside the tower to discover lovely views across the town.

You can visit the inside of the villa to see the restored rooms, that show the villa as it was in the 19th century - the villa existed before this, but it was at this time that a wealthy Scotsman called Francis Nevile Reid bought the villa and gave it the appearance it has today.

In the villa grounds you can also see the remains of a cloister, with attractive arches in stone separated by thin columns.

Apart from the buildings, it is of course the gardens and terrace that are the principal attraction at Villa Rufolo.

The gardens are not very extensive by they are nicely maintained, with lots of flowers, and create an attractive setting. There are several views across the sea from the gardens, each as lovely as the next!

Between the villa and the sea, 300 metres below, there are pine trees, a church and the houses of the town. Our favourite view is from the upper garden, because this also includes the formal gardens of the lower garden

The lower garden as also well known as the setting for an annual concert dedicated to Wagner, the composer. This tradition started in 1953 and is based on the time that Wagner visited the villa in 1880, and said he saw the garden of Villa Rufolo as Klingsor's garden in Parsifal.

The Ravello festival, as it is known is now a successful event in the musical calendar in Italy, and you will see exhibits relating to Wagner, and hear his music playing, as you explore the villa and grounds.
