Villa Cimbrone is an famous building and garden near Ravello in south-west Italy, on the Amalfi coast.

Italy This Way review: although the garden is not the most exciting you will visit, the views across the Mediterranean from the balcony at Villa Cimbrone are outstanding and a visit is recommended.

Although the origins of the villa date back 100 years, almost all that we see today is a 20th century redesign, with objects and statues brough here from all across Italy to create a certain idealised look for the villa gardens.

View towards the Mediterranean from Villa Cimbrone

The most interesting buildings at Villa Cimbrone are near the entrance to the site. The entrance itself is set in a walled courtyard garden with palm trees growing.

Just inside the entrance there is a small but very pretty cloister and a crypt. The cloister is surrounded by arches and decorative columns, and there is a well in the centre of the cloister that has also been built using the same styles.

In the passage around the edge of the cloister you can see various statues and carvings and further decorative elements.

From this part of the garden, beyond the crypt you can also access a terrace / belvedere with views across the countryside through a series of imposing stone arches.

On your right, you can see a large rose garden as well as a building called the Salon de Thé (tea shop).

You can now follow the main path that leads from the villa to the balcony overlooking the sea. The path is straight, lined with trees and flower beds, and gives access to various small garden areas to the left.

At the end of this path you reach the famous terrace of Villa Cimbrone, the Terrazza dell'Infinito (Terrace of Infinity). The balcony has very extensive views across the Mediterranean and the coastal area. There are various classical busts along the edge of the terrace that add further to the charm of your visit.

At one end of the terrace there is a small building that contains another imposing statue, of Cérès, the Roman God of agriculture and fertility.

To continue your visit, follow the path around to the right. This path then passes through a garden area and continues through a less formal area, through a woodland. As you follow the path you will see various statues and small structures, such as the Temple of Bacchus, that add to the interest of the visit.

The visit does not include the main villa, because this is now a luxury hotel. If you are looking for somewhere very upmarket to stay during your visit to Ravello, see Villa Cibrone Hotel.

Attractions nearby

Another famous villa is also to be found here in Ravello - the Villa Rufolo - and visitors to the village will usually visit both of the villas.

The town of Ravello is quite small but a pleasure to explore, and a few kilometres from here on the coast is the most important town on the Amalfi coast, renowned for its beauty.
