Visit Padenghe sul Garda
The town and resort of Padenghe sul Garda is on the south-west shores of Lake Garda, a few kilometres from the popular historic town of Sirmione.
Exploring Padenghe sul Garda
Italy This Way comment: although Padenghe sul Garda is quite a minor resort compared with many on the shores of lake Garda, it has a large beach on the shores of the lake and an interesting castello to visit.
The three main parts of the town, the lakefront, the town centre and the castello, are each a few hundred metres apart.
Start your visit in the historic centre of Padenghe. It is true that here is not a great deal to see, but several of the buildings are interesting and there are a few small shops and cafes.
The most interesting building, the town church, looks quite plain from the outside although the baroque style facade is a clue that you should go inside and take a look - the interior is also in the baroque style with lots of painted decoration, gilded columns and frescoed ceilings.
A short walk from here you can reach the lake front, where there is quite a long and easily accessible beach area.
Our favourite destination in Padenghe sul Garda is the castello, on the hill above the town centre. From the outside this looks no different from hundreds of other ancient castles, that you would probably visit for a quick look and to enjoy the lovely views across Lake Garda, with quite well preserved medieval walls.
In fact, quite unexpectedly, inside the castle walls there is an entire small historic village, with rows of houses and small flower gardens and vegetable gardens, as well as a tower you can climb for views across the roofs of the village / castello. There are only three streets, perhaps 20 houses altogether, so a visit doesn't take long but recommended if you are nearby.
The views across the lake from here are also very impressive on a clear day.
While here you are close to Desenzano del Garda, one of our favourite small towns on Lake Garda.
The most visited historic town on Lake Garda is Sirmione, on a peninsula at the southern end of the lake and just a few kilometres from Padenghe sul Garda. There are many other towns and resorts close by - see the Lake Garda guide for details.
