Visit Ossuccio

Ossuccio is a village on the south-west part of Lake Como in northern Italy.

Exploring Ossuccio

Italy This Way review: Ossuccio is a small village but has an unusual church as well as access to a lake beach and park so we recommend you take a sroll around the village when you are passing

Historic church in Ossuccio

You quickly reach the centre of Ossuccio, where you see the Church of Santa Maria Maddelena. This church was built in the roman style in the 11th century, although the ornate belltower that dominates the view of the village was added in the 15th century and is in the gothic style. Inside the church you can see traces of medieval frescoes

The second church you reach is the Church of Saint Euphemie which has stood here since the 12th century - before that the church was on Isola Comacina, the island in Lake Como a short distance from here. The original church was very small but was extended in the 14th and 17th centuries, and the choir area redesigned at the end of the 19th century.

Renovations in 1967-1968 restored elements of the romanesque design, and gave us the church we see today. The facade and the presbytery contain romanesque elements, and inside the church you can see paintings, remains of some ancient frescoes and a tombstone of Bishop Agrippino, brought here from Isola Comacina and dating from the 7th century. The chapels are very ornate with statues and carvings.

The war memorial in the square behind the church is very different in character to the church: it is a curved design, built in 1924 and in the style called rationalist architecture. The other important building on this square is the baptistery, which also includes elements in the romanesque style.

On the edge of Ossuccio next to the Perlana river you can see the Villa del Balbiano (from the outside only - the villa is not open to the public). This is a beautiful villa with formal gardens that was built in the 16th century. Beyond the historic centre of Ossuccio you reach Lake Como, which has a swimming area and a park here and is very popular in the summer.

The island you can see from here, and visit by boat, is Isola Comacina. This island has been used as a setting for several films including The Pleasure Garden, the first film directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
