Explore Campitello Matese

Campitello Matese is one of the most popular ski resorts in the mountains of central-southern Italy. It has about 40km of slopes at all levels though mostly in the intermediate range. The slopes are served by a mix of chair lifts and ski-lifts.

As well as downhill skiing there is a relatively new cross-country ski area which is becoming increasingly popular. A snow park is also being created to provide for the increased enthuiasm for snow boarding. It will have structures to accomodate beginner, intermediate and advanced level snowboarders.

For summer visitors the beautiful mountain countryside offers plenty of walking trails as well as mountain biking, road biking, horseriding, potholing and paragliding. The countryside is a diverse mix of mountains, hills and plains and has some glorious beech woods to explore.

The area is also a popular stage of the Italian cycling race the 'Giro d'Italia' and it is one of the more challenging ascents in the Apennine range. The last time it featured in the road race was 2002. For those of you wishing to pracice your ascents note that from San Massimo Campitello the uphill finish is 21 kilometers long at an 850 meter altitude and an average slope of 6.4%!

The town of Campitello Matese has all the facilities you would expect of a popular ski station - hotels, chalets, bars and restaurants and these are open for summer and winter visitors.

Nearby Sepino is a beautiful town with interesting Roman remains to explore. Or visit the Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in the town of Castelpetroso which looks particularly magical in the winter surrounded by snow and fir trees.

Campitello Matese is in the Campobasso province of Molise. It is 40 kilometers south-east of Isernia and 45 kilometers south-west of Campobasso.
