Campania travel guide
CAMPANIA and NAPLES
In southern Italy, the Campania region contains some of the greatest and most famous sites in the country, with the area along the coast and the nearby islands being especially renowned.
Central to the region is Naples - a noisy, not especially attractive city at first glance, it has several great treasures to discover. Including pizzas!
Leaving Naples to the north the amphitheatre at Santa Maria Capua Vetere and the Palazzo Reale at Caserta are highlights. If you are still seeking more great Roman monuments continue inland to discover Benevento.
To the south-east of Naples is the incredible town of Pompeii, buried by a volcanic eruption almost 2000 years ago, and now excavated to reveal the secrets of living in those times. See also Herculaneum. Slightly further south-east again, Salerno has some interesting historical buildings to discover.
In contrast to the bustle of Naples, the coast off Campania includes the islands of Capri and Ischia and Procida - each popular with visitors, and very scenic. If that isn't enough scenic beauty, continue southwards along to the Amalfi coast - an exceptionally beautiful stretch of rock coastline (although it's a bit hard to find a beach).

AMALFI COAST
To the south of the region, the Greek temples at Paestum are a stunning site to discover.
